Chapter 5 · Lesson 7 of 13
Proof of insurance and SR22 reinstatement
5 min read · Points, Suspensions, and Insurance Requirements
Explanation
The BMV may request proof after an accident, a third pointable moving violation within a year, a serious traffic violation, or a pointable violation by a driver previously suspended for failing to provide proof.
Contact the insurer immediately. Its electronic Certificate of Compliance must be received and processed within 90 days of the mailed request or privileges are suspended.
After the specified no-insurance suspension, the insurer must electronically file an effective SR22 for reinstatement. Without it, the suspension continues.
Example
A driver receives a BMV proof request after an accident and asks the insurer to submit the COC electronically without delay.
Common mistake
Mailing proof personally and waiting. The manual directs the driver to have the insurance provider submit the COC electronically.
What the manual says
The COC must be received electronically from your insurer and processed by the BMV within 90 days
A failure to file an SR22 will result in the continuation of a suspension on your driving record until your insurance provider files an effective SR22.
